HOMIES DOWNTOWN ~ OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA

24 June 2008 ~ I was out with a friend teaching him basic skills for street photography. One of the first rules is, "Connect if you can." So I approached this large group of people and told them I was teaching my friend, and that they looked like great subjects. Then I showed them some prints I keep in my camera bag for that purpose. While they looked through the photos and loosened up, we shot away and became friends too. Most people drop their guard to help someone if they can.

Granted, lots of people associate street photography with voyeurism or almost spy work. I don't think it has to be that way. Hip shots can be incredible but more often the expressions I get out of interacting are more rewarding. You see less of the cold stranger and more of the warm citizen and fellow.
